How To Clean Your Silver Jewelry in 7 Steps

Weekly Wednesday Jewelry Lesson

Silver jewelry conveys a beautiful and elegant shimmer. Unfortunately, silver will begin to tarnish when it is exposed to humidity. It is important to clean your jewelry every so often to help get rid of the dark black coating of tarnish.

Here is what you will need to clean your silver jewelry:

1. A cup of boiling water

2. A tablespoon of baking soda

3. A half cup of white vinegar

4. A tablespoon of white salt

5. A bowl (size depends on how much silver you have to clean)

6. A sheet of tinfoil

7. A type of polishing cloth

How To Clean Your Silver Jewelry

Follow these 7 simple steps to clean your silver jewelry:

Step 1: Boil your water.

Step 2: Take your sheet of tinfoil and line the bottom of your bowl with it. Make sure the shiny side is facing up.

Step 3: Pour 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 1 tablespoon of white salt into the bowl. Then add a half cup of vinegar slowly.

Step 4: Mix the baking soda, salt and vinegar until the salt and baking soda is dissolved. This step is important, because you don’t want to scratch your silver jewelry.

Step 5: Add your cup of boiling water into the bowl.

Step 6: Gently drop each piece of silver jewelry into the bowl. Then, let your jewelry sit in the bowl. Carefully flip your jewelry over to make sure each side comes in contact with the tinfoil.

Step 7: Take each piece of silver jewelry out of the bowl and buff it with your polishing cloth delicately.

Ultimately, bringing your jewelry into the store makes it shine the best, because jewelers have expensive machines that help them clean your silver jewelry.  However, for those times in between your visits to the store, you can follow these simple steps to help keep your silver jewelry looking beautiful!
