“Sarah and I met at Virginia Tech during my freshman and her sophomore year through a group of mutual friends, but it wasn’t until after knowing each other for a year that we started dating. Virginia Tech is where we met and where we fell in love.
We were planning on going back to Virginia Tech for a football game and to celebrate Sarah’s 25th birthday with all our friends. I had decided this would be the perfect weekend to propose. I contacted Sarah’s girlfriends, who played along and told her that they would be getting into town late and we’d have to waste some time when we got there. Once we arrived to Blacksburg on Friday afternoon, we walked around campus and conveniently ended up at our favorite place, the Duck Pond. I had also arranged for a friend, who is photographer, to capture the moment. Everything went as planned and I popped the question on the edge of the pond, ducks included! She said YES! A toast was held at our gracious host’s home, where she had chilled champagne waiting. We spent the rest of the weekend celebrating with friends and watching the Hokies win!
The ring was designed around an heirloom round cut diamond, given to me by my mother, from her mother who had it set in a Methodist cross. While visiting Kranich’s, I noticed a wrap for an engagement ring in the display case that incorporated two rubies coming off the sides at an angle. I decided I wanted to use maroon (dark red ruby) and orange (citrine), our alma mater colors, without appearing like a championship ring. Overall I was ecstatic with the outcome! The employees at Kranich’s quickly located a jeweler who could wax mold a custom ring in the tight time frame, everything was handled professionally and most importantly, on time!”
