Five tips for planning the perfect fall marriage proposal.

Five Tips for Planning the Perfect Fall Marriage Proposal

The crisp air and gorgeous color changes in the leaves make fall a perfect season for marriage proposals. If you’ve found your soulmate and the perfect engagement ring, all that you need is a gorgeous backdrop and a well thought out plan to pop the question.

Take a look at our five planning tips for the perfect fall marriage proposal.

Location, location, location. During the fall, there are plenty of opportunities for you to ask for her hand. Whether it’s at the end of a corn maze, on a hayride, or in a beautiful park, this season lends itself to picturesque settings. While it may be tempting to pick a trendy place to get down on one knee, pick a spot that’s unique and special to you and your significant other. Because what’s trendy today might not be in the future, so you’ll want to make a plan that’s both memorable and meaningful. Another thing to consider when planning your proposal is whether or not this will be a public or private engagement. If you know for certain that your significant other does not like to be in the spotlight, we suggest that you keep your engagement private. Conversely, if you know she wouldn’t dream of this moment without her family close by, then by all means, share your plans with them! Every engagement is different, so keep your loved one in mind when deciding if you should propose in private or in front of a group of people. If you’re unsure, do some digging. Ask close friends and family for advice.

Make it meaningful. A marriage proposal is, without a doubt, one of the most romantic moments for a couple. Don’t just blurt out “I love you” and drop to one knee out of nowhere. Your beloved will be either extremely confused or think you’re having a medical emergency. Rather, plan ahead and think back on all the moments when you knew that she was the one. Talk about when you first saw her, your first date, the first time you kissed, or when you first said I love you. Use these details to tell her how much she means to you and how you want to spend forever with her. Now, we’re not going to tell you what to say, but think of it this way: If there’s ever a time to be sentimental, it’s during your proposal, so don’t be afraid to get emotional.

Play into the season. As we mentioned in our first tip, autumn offers plenty of opportunities and ideas for your engagement. If you’re stuck, let us help get the creative juices flowing.

  1. If you’re carving pumpkins, plan ahead and carve out three gourds with the message, “Will you marry me?” Keep those pumpkins in hiding while you and your significant other are carving your pumpkins. When you’re done, let her know that you’ll arrange the pumpkins outside and for her to wait inside. Once you grab your proposal pumpkins, bring her outside to see your pumpkins on display – and your big question.
  2. Consider a scenic hike or a walk through the park. As a couple, if you love to hike, do your research and find a new trail that leads to breathtaking views. Once you’ve made it to the crescendo of the hike, it’s time to get down on bended knee. If neither one of you are hikers, consider a nice walk through the park. Again, do a little legwork to find a picturesque spot in the park to pop the question. The gorgeous fall colors in the background of both scenarios will make for an even more memorable moment.

Be in the moment. If you’re ok with a little publicity of your big moment, hire a professional photographer or a trusted friend or family member to capture the moment. You’ll both be so caught up in the moment that you won’t be able to remember every detail of the actual proposal. Having it captured in pictures will allow you to look back and recall how you felt in that moment. Plus, who doesn’t love to share their engagement story and pictures on social media? (We know we love sharing some of our favorites!)

Pick the perfect ring. Of course, you’ll want to make sure you pick out the perfect ring to go with the perfect proposal. At Kranich’s, we help our clients choose an engagement ring that they know their beloved will absolutely adore. Engagement ring shopping is more than just a technical experience – it gives you the chance to show your love with a gorgeous diamond ring. If you’re in the market for an engagement ring, let us help. We have a large selection of designer rings such as VerragioSimon G., and Polenza, among others. Or, if you’d prefer a truly custom engagement ring, we offer a variety of loose diamonds to accompany our myriad setting options.

Kristen & Ethan’s Engagement Story

Congratulations to Kristen and Ethan on their recent engagement! Ethan proposed to Kristen with a beautiful Kranich’s Jewelers diamond engagement ring in the picture below.

Diamond engagement ring

In Kristen’s words, here’s how their engagement story went:

“Ethan and I have known each other since we were toddlers and have been dating for about four years now. This past Wednesday, he took me fishing at Raystown Lake and up to the Ridenour Overlook afterwards, where he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him! I said yes, of course! He completely caught me off guard. Going to the lake and overlook is something we do often together every summer. He did good (ring & proposal)! It was the perfect evening, weather and all.”

John & Cathy’s Engagement Story: The Right Diamond for the Right Romance

We would like to wish a congratulations to John and Cathy on their recent engagement!

Engagement Story

Below, John shares with us how he met and proposed to Cathy and how he chose the perfect engagement ring for her.  You can watch their engagement story here: John Proposes to Cathy

Diamond Engagement Ring

“Cathy and I met in the Fall of 2013 and instantly clicked. On the fourth day of dating I said to her “mahal kita”, which means “I love you” in Tagalog. She replied with “mahal din kita”, which means “I love you, too”. Cathy moved to the US in 2011 from the Philippines, her native country. We carried on a long distance relationship over Skype video chat, phone calls, and PMs every day since then. I would visit her one month, then she’d visit me the next. We discussed marriage quite a bit, and what we both want out of life. We are the same age and have been through past relationships, but never married. I had almost given in to the thought of being a bachelor forever. Then I met Cathy, the love of my life.

I surprised Cathy with a wedding proposal on a trip down to Washington, DC from State College, PA. I planned a weekend at Hyatt Dulles to pop the question after dinner with a special proposal video for her to watch. I even set up a camera to record the proposal. I had her sit and watch the video as I kneeled down. At first she thought I was just showing her a new app generated video on my phone until she learned what the video was really about. I presented the ring and she said yes! Cathy plans to move to State College, PA to be with me after the wedding. I work as an IT Systems Analyst for Penn State University, and Cathy plans to use her RN to find a nursing position locally.

Engagement Story

There are so many factors in selecting a diamond and setting for engagement rings. I’m such a geek that I extensively researched diamonds online to understand all of the grading specifications and get a good idea of what affects the price of a diamond. I built an array of diamond criteria to match my budget. I took this knowledge to all of the local jewelers in State College and Bellefonte, PA. I was disappointed with how little sales associates wanted to work from my perspective of focusing on getting the right diamond instead of just selecting something in a display case. That is until I met Mickey from Kranich’s Jewelers in downtown, State College. Mickey was willing to listen and spend the time to find a dozen diamonds from his suppliers to match what I wanted. Better yet, he beat everyone else’s price in town. In a couple days I stopped back in to choose just the right diamond from the those he had shipped to him. It was a beautiful 1/2 carat diamond with an ideal cut, polish, and symmetry that sparkled wildly in the light.

Cathy absolutely loves her engagement ring and we plan to marry locally in February of 2014, then have a larger church wedding in Washington DC for family in the summer.”

Joe & Emily’s Engagement Story

engagement story

We would like to congratulate Joe and Emily on their engagement! Emily recently shared with us how Joe proposed to her.  Here’s how it went in Emily’s words:

“For Joe’s birthday I surprised him with tickets to his first ever Steelers football game! We mapped out our plan to drive 6 hours to spend the weekend in Pittsburgh with his grandma and go to the game. It was my first time going to Pittsburgh so Joe decided he wanted to take me into the city Saturday night and we’d go to a nice restaurant for a “fancy date night”. When Saturday approached, we dressed up, drove into the city and parked at the bottom of Mt. Washington to take The Incline up the side of the mountain. Well I had no idea, but Joe was beginning to get a little nervous at this point because as we waited 45 minutes in line, he could see the spot at the top of the mountain where he was planning to pop the question. Once we reached the top of Mt. Washington we began walking to the restaurant, or so I thought!

Instead we came to a beautiful scenic overlook and Joe insisted on us stopping to take a picture. After we snapped a few photos, I was expecting us to rush to get to our dinner reservation on time, but Joe had other plans. As we walked to the end of the scenic overlook he turned and faced me and I could tell he seemed nervous. At that moment my heart started racing a thousand miles an hour and I knew what was about to happen. As Joe reached in his pocket and got down on one knee he shared with me reasons he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me, making memories with me and pursing dreams with me, and then he said that in order to do that, he first needed to ask me one more question. He asked me to marry him! And I of course said YESSS!!!!!

engagement storyThe moments that followed were such a blur to me, I was so surprised, shocked, excited and joyful I couldn’t hardly handle it! We spent a few moments taking more pictures with the beautiful sun setting over the city and of course admiring my new beautiful ring!

And then we walked down the street to enjoy a fantastic dinner at the LeMont Restaurant just the two of us. We had a private table overlooking the entire city of Pittsburgh and Joe had beautiful flowers waiting for me! Once we finished dinner we spent the rest of the evening calling all of our family and closest friends to share the news with them.

The next morning I woke up still in shock that I was engaged!!! And as I laid in bed I began texting my sister pictures of my ring… little did I know Joe had her waiting in the next room to surprise me!!!  My sister and her husband drove through the night to surprise me and spend the whole next day with me and Joe. She’s a wedding photographer and so she also surprised us by offering to go ahead and take some engagement pictures for us that day! We had such a blast taking pictures right after getting engaged!

Two weeks after the proposal we were in my hometown for an engagement party and Joe surprised me YET AGAIN! As a slideshow of all of our pictures together scrolled through, all of the sudden a picture of our proposal appeared! I was speechless! “Wait… what?? How did he?! Who?!” It turns out Joe and my sister secretly hired a Pittsburgh photographer, Zack Wilson, to document our whole proposal without me knowing it!! This was such an incredible surprise and I am beyond thankful to have such beautiful images to remember a once in a lifetime moment!!”

College Sweethearts Engagement Story – Garrett & Sarah

engagement storyCollege Sweethearts, Garrett & Sarah, recently got engaged on their college campus at Virginia Tech.  We loved their engagement story so much, we wanted to share it with you!

engagement storyIn Garrett’s words, here’s how he surprised Sarah with the perfect proposal:

“Sarah and I met at Virginia Tech during my freshman and her sophomore year through a group of mutual friends, but it wasn’t until after knowing each other for a year that we started dating. Virginia Tech is where we met and where we fell in love.

We were planning on going back to Virginia Tech for a football game and to celebrate Sarah’s 25th birthday with all our friends. I had decided this would be the perfect weekend to propose. I contacted Sarah’s girlfriends, who played along and told her that they would be getting into town late and we’d have to waste some time when we got there. Once we arrived to Blacksburg on Friday afternoon, we walked around campus and conveniently ended up at our favorite place, the Duck Pond. I had also arranged for a friend, who is photographer, to capture the moment. Everything went as planned and I popped the question on the edge of the pond, ducks included! She said YES! A toast was held at our gracious host’s home, where she had chilled champagne waiting. We spent the rest of the weekend celebrating with friends and watching the Hokies win!

The ring was designed around an heirloom round cut diamond, given to me by my mother, from her mother who had it set in a Methodist cross. While visiting Kranich’s, I noticed a wrap for an engagement ring in the display case that incorporated two rubies coming off the sides at an angle. I decided I wanted to use maroon (dark red ruby) and orange (citrine), our alma mater colors, without appearing like a championship ring. Overall I was ecstatic with the outcome! The employees at Kranich’s quickly located a jeweler who could wax mold a custom ring in the tight time frame, everything was handled professionally and most importantly, on time!”

Patrick & Sarah’s Beautiful Engagement Story

engagement storyCongratulation to Patrick and Sarah on a beautiful engagement! Find out how Patrick proposed to Sarah below:

Patrick and Sarah met in the spring of 2011 in South Africa as Penn State students exploring their “wild” side.  After experiencing those ten amazing weeks together, they knew there was something special between them, and they started dating shortly after their return to Pennsylvania. In their free time together, over the last two years, they spent countless hours together walking in the woods, practicing their most favorite shared past time together, nature photography.

It was a sunny afternoon in the middle of summer, when Patrick asked Sarah if she’d like to go to Bald Eagle State Park. She said yes, expecting nothing less than the usual routine, and off they went. They went on a walk along the water, sharing stories and taking pictures, grilled lunch over an open fire, and started a game of Rummy 500. Before it was time to leave the park, Patrick went from sitting to crouching on one knee, and Sarah was blown away. He presented Sarah with a ring and asked like you would expect “will you please marry me?” In disbelief the worst words a person on one knee could expect escaped out of Sarah’s mouth, “no, no, no!” Her answer was of course yes, though, and it’s been history since!

Keegan & Ashley’s Romantic Engagement Story

“The ring from Kranich’s Jewelers stole her heart (only after I did of course).”

Engagement RingThis is a picture of the breathtaking engagement ring Keegan surprised Ashley with when he proposed to her.  Here’s how their engagement story went in Keegan’s words:

“After some planning and scheming, Ashley and I took a walk on Cocoa Beach after dinner just before sunset. During our walk, she stumbled over what appeared to be a wine bottle nestled just under the sand. Seeing there was still a cork in the top, we turned back and pulled the bottle up to investigate. To our surprise, there was a letter rolled up neatly inside. “Should we open it?” she asked. “Absolutely!”  I replied as cautiously as I could.

After my excitement ripped the cork in half, leaving half of it still wedged in the bottle neck, I handed the bottle over to a more delicate set of hands. As we knelt in the sand, she maneuvered the half cork around the letter inside the bottle and freed the tightly bound bundle. As she began reading, it became obvious we had stumbled upon someone’s secret poem! We laughed as she read it line by line until midway through the Shakespearean/Dr. Sues poetic letter. That was when she realized that what she had stumbled upon was written about her.

Engagement RingTears of joy weld up in her eyes as she started slowly reading aloud. As she finished she turned to me and I to her, both kneeling in the sand. I held out before her the ring and with the encouraging words “You need to stand up for the next part”. “I don’t think I can” she replied through tears of joy. From there, on our knees as the sun set behind the beach, she answered my question just how I had hoped: Yes.”

Congratulations to Keegan and Ashley! Here are a few more pictures from their romantic day.

Alex & Melody’s Engagement Story

Engagement StoryCongratulations to both Alex and Melody on your recent engagement! We are very happy for the two of you. Thanks for sharing your beautiful engagement story with us.

Here’s a picture of the ring Alex bought at Kranich’s Jewelers for his fiancé, Melody:

Engagement ring

In Alex’s words, here’s how their proposal story went:

“My fiancé, Mel, and I have been dating for 5 years, and this past December, I decided that I wanted to propose to her. After trying to pry and figure out what my fiancé would want in a ring, I was finally ready to buy my ring. I picked out the ring, and after a few months, I had payed it off, and was able to bring it home.

One evening, I took my fiancé out to a nice dinner, and asked if we could stop by to say hello to my sister while she was working. When we got to the church, that I told her we were going to, I brought her into the sanctuary where I had a friend of mine play a song on the piano, while I danced and sang to her. I asked her to marry me, she said yes, and we walked out of the sanctuary.

A few months prior, I had contacted our close friends and family, asking them to be a part of our engagement. As Mel and I walked out the door to the sanctuary, around 60 people were waiting just outside the door, ready to give hugs and congratulations. We spent the rest of the evening celebrating and spending time with friends and family.”
