Now in its third generation of family ownership and operation, Kranich’s Jewelers in Central Pennsylvania recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. It all started just prior to 1900 when the eight Kranich brothers and their parents fled Russia and came to this country. As the Kranichs settled into life here, they also began to make their way in the jewelry business, eventually opening stores in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.
It was Charles who operated Pennsylvania’s Altoona store, and it is his son and grandsons who run the business today. Under Charles’ son Michael’s leadership, the original store in downtown Altoona gave way in 1987 to a larger flagship store at the Logan Valley Mall. In 1992, he opened a second location, this one in downtown State College, PA. As Michael’s sons Charles and Mike Jr. joined the business, the two stores grew into four, adding another State College location (at the Nittany Mall), and a store at the Galleria in Johnstown, PA.
Today, Kranich’s Jewelers has the largest selection of fine jewelry, watches and gifts in the region, and enjoys a widespread reputation for outstanding quality and service. Michael Kranich and his sons attribute much of their stores’ success to the knowledge and dedication of many long-time employees. In fact, 88 year old Cosmo Michael Lopresti, who has worked for Kranich’s for almost sixty years, was recently named Jeweler Of The Year by the Pennsylvania Jewelers Association. He still works at the Logan Valley Mall store and often serves the great grandchildren of customers he had when he began his career at Kranich’s.
Michael Kranich is proud that his sons have joined him in the family business, just as he joined his father. Kranich believes they are one of the oldest family owned jewelry stores in the country, with over 80 continuous years of doing business in Altoona. “My father loved this business, I love this business, and now my sons love this business”, he says.
