Five tips for planning the perfect fall marriage proposal.

Five Tips for Planning the Perfect Fall Marriage Proposal

The crisp air and gorgeous color changes in the leaves make fall a perfect season for marriage proposals. If you’ve found your soulmate and the perfect engagement ring, all that you need is a gorgeous backdrop and a well thought out plan to pop the question.

Take a look at our five planning tips for the perfect fall marriage proposal.

Location, location, location. During the fall, there are plenty of opportunities for you to ask for her hand. Whether it’s at the end of a corn maze, on a hayride, or in a beautiful park, this season lends itself to picturesque settings. While it may be tempting to pick a trendy place to get down on one knee, pick a spot that’s unique and special to you and your significant other. Because what’s trendy today might not be in the future, so you’ll want to make a plan that’s both memorable and meaningful. Another thing to consider when planning your proposal is whether or not this will be a public or private engagement. If you know for certain that your significant other does not like to be in the spotlight, we suggest that you keep your engagement private. Conversely, if you know she wouldn’t dream of this moment without her family close by, then by all means, share your plans with them! Every engagement is different, so keep your loved one in mind when deciding if you should propose in private or in front of a group of people. If you’re unsure, do some digging. Ask close friends and family for advice.

Make it meaningful. A marriage proposal is, without a doubt, one of the most romantic moments for a couple. Don’t just blurt out “I love you” and drop to one knee out of nowhere. Your beloved will be either extremely confused or think you’re having a medical emergency. Rather, plan ahead and think back on all the moments when you knew that she was the one. Talk about when you first saw her, your first date, the first time you kissed, or when you first said I love you. Use these details to tell her how much she means to you and how you want to spend forever with her. Now, we’re not going to tell you what to say, but think of it this way: If there’s ever a time to be sentimental, it’s during your proposal, so don’t be afraid to get emotional.

Play into the season. As we mentioned in our first tip, autumn offers plenty of opportunities and ideas for your engagement. If you’re stuck, let us help get the creative juices flowing.

  1. If you’re carving pumpkins, plan ahead and carve out three gourds with the message, “Will you marry me?” Keep those pumpkins in hiding while you and your significant other are carving your pumpkins. When you’re done, let her know that you’ll arrange the pumpkins outside and for her to wait inside. Once you grab your proposal pumpkins, bring her outside to see your pumpkins on display – and your big question.
  2. Consider a scenic hike or a walk through the park. As a couple, if you love to hike, do your research and find a new trail that leads to breathtaking views. Once you’ve made it to the crescendo of the hike, it’s time to get down on bended knee. If neither one of you are hikers, consider a nice walk through the park. Again, do a little legwork to find a picturesque spot in the park to pop the question. The gorgeous fall colors in the background of both scenarios will make for an even more memorable moment.

Be in the moment. If you’re ok with a little publicity of your big moment, hire a professional photographer or a trusted friend or family member to capture the moment. You’ll both be so caught up in the moment that you won’t be able to remember every detail of the actual proposal. Having it captured in pictures will allow you to look back and recall how you felt in that moment. Plus, who doesn’t love to share their engagement story and pictures on social media? (We know we love sharing some of our favorites!)

Alex & Melody’s Engagement Story

In Alex’s words, here’s how their proposal story went:

“My fiancé, Mel, and I have been dating for 5 years, and this past December, I decided that I wanted to propose to her. After trying to pry and figure out what my fiancé would want in a ring, I was finally ready to buy my ring. I picked out the ring, and after a few months, I had payed it off, and was able to bring it home.

One evening, I took my fiancé out to a nice dinner, and asked if we could stop by to say hello to my sister while she was working. When we got to the church, that I told her we were going to, I brought her into the sanctuary where I had a friend of mine play a song on the piano, while I danced and sang to her. I asked her to marry me, she said yes, and we walked out of the sanctuary.

A few months prior, I had contacted our close friends and family, asking them to be a part of our engagement. As Mel and I walked out the door to the sanctuary, around 60 people were waiting just outside the door, ready to give hugs and congratulations. We spent the rest of the evening celebrating and spending time with friends and family.”

Engagement Story – Kate & Gustavo

Recently, Kate shared her amazing engagement story with us.  Even though their original plans had changed, Kate and Gustavo created a very memorable trip together.

Engagement StoryHere’s how Gustavo proposed to Kate (Written in Kate’s words):

“Gustavo and I had planned to go to New York for Thanksgiving, but plans changed when our hotel was damaged in Superstorm Sandy and closed for business.  Instead, we decided to take a quick trip up to New Haven, CT, since both of us had always wanted to visit Yale’s campus.

On our first morning in town, we were headed out of the hotel when Gustavo said he had forgotten his watch up in the room.  I waited downstairs for quite a while and had almost decided to go back upstairs to see what was wrong when he finally came back down.  (Now that I know the rest of the story, this was when he was going back up to get the ring and trying to figure out the best place to hide it in his jacket!)

After breakfast, Gustavo suggested we take a walk through campus.  It was a beautiful autumn day, and I was having a great time seeing all the old buildings and statues around Yale.  We entered into an empty plaza (since it was Thanksgiving, the majority of students were gone), and Gustavo took the opportunity to get down on one knee and propose.  I was completely surprised by the proposal, but of course was overjoyed & immediately said yes!

Even though neither of us attended Yale as students, we’ll always remember the beautiful campus and the spot where we became engaged.”

Engagement Story – Jessica & Doug

Jessica and Doug recently shared their proposal and engagement story with us.  We loved it so much we wanted to share their memorable and heartfelt moment with you.

Engagement and Proposal Story

In Jess’s words, here’s how their proposal story went:

“My boyfriend, Doug, decided he would propose to me on our trip to Disney World. Prior to the trip, my Grandmother gave him one of my Great Grandmothers rings to use for the engagement as they both knew it would mean so much to me. Doug had it cleaned, re-sized, and fixed, before we left. Our second night in Disney, we ate at a restaurant on the water. The food, service, and atmosphere were great! After supper the chef brought us a huge dessert platter and told me it was in celebration of our special occasion. Needless to say, I was confused. Now, they had just sung Happy Birthday to someone 2 tables down from us. So I was about to tell the gentleman that he must have had the wrong table, when Doug, beaming from ear to ear, got up from the table, came around to me, knelt down on one knee, pulled out the ring, and asked me to marry him! I said yes (of course) and was about crying (my hands were visibly shaking) when he put the ring on my finger! It’s beautiful. The staff gave us the dessert, ‘just engaged’ buttons, and champagne, and the whole room clapped for us and congratulated us. It was amazing! We’ll never forget it!”
