Boy Finds Treasure in The Back Yard

In case you missed it over the weekend, here is a nice story out of the Boston area about a young boy who found a missing engagement ring and wedding band while playing in the back yard.

Ryan Baima, 3, loves to dig in his yard, and it was while he was digging recently that he made an incredible discovery.

He brought a ring, caked with dirt, over to his mother.  Luna Baima says she didn’t think much of it, until Ryan asked if she wanted the other one.  That’s when it clicked in her head, that her son had likely just found someone’s engagement ring and wedding band.Luna began asking neighbors about the rings, and one neighor remembered that 33 years ago, a woman named Joan Mulligan had lost her rings while weeding in the yard.

Everlon Diamond Knot Collection Is Not Always The Same

Everlon Diamond Knot Collection

This holiday season you can feel positive that you have given her what she really wants. The anticipation builds and a smile comes to her face, then in the blink of an eye, the sparkle of an Everlon diamond reflects in her gaze. The Everlon Diamond Knot Collection available at Kranich’s Jewelers will take her breath away. Symbolizing the strength of love forged in a knot, the Everlon diamond knot collection is modeled after the Hercules knot, which is an ancient symbol of strength. Without the diamond resting at the heart of each Everlon diamond knot the endless loop would simply unravel.

Everlon Diamond Knot Rings

So why should you choose Kranich’s Jewelers for your Everlon diamond knot? It’s simple really. All Everlon is not the same. Take a close look at the Everlon jewelry from other manufacturers side by side with ours. Our competitor’s classic style Everlon diamond knot ring, from a different manufacturer, is noticeably different. Notice the smooth lines and craftsmanship that you get with the Everlon diamond knot ring at Kranich’s. Each Everlon diamond knot piece at Kranich’s Jewelers is individually inspected so we can make sure our customers receive the quality Everlon diamond knot that they deserve and that it will be a cut above the rest.

Everlon diamond knot necklaces

Still need more convincing? Let’s look at an Everlon Diamond Knot Necklace. The diamond at the heart of an Everlon necklace secures the knot holding it in place, so why would you want a prong set diamond holding it in place? Is the diamond not strong enough on its own? Now look at the Kranich’s Everlon diamond knot necklace. This Everlon has the clean quality design that you would expect from a jeweler with over 100 years of experience.

This year, give the most important person in your life, the gift of an Everlon Diamond Knot. Remember that true love is ever sure, ever lasting and ever strong but all Everlon is not the same. Kranichs Jewelers has been family owned and operated providing quality and service since 1903. We stand behind our quality products because we know she isn’t just any other girl and she deserves more than just any other Everlon Diamond Knot.

How Do You Tell if a Diamond is Fake?

Appraisal

It’s a thorny subject, but an extremely important one. Plenty of people want to know how you can spot a real diamond from a fake, and while folk answers abound, Kranich’s Jewelers provides this brief guide to help you separate fact from fiction, real from fake.

For starters, a diamond is not a moissanite or cubic zirconium. Both of these stones, while bearing a similar look to diamonds, have neither the brilliance or hardness of actual diamonds. Finding either of these terms used in relation to your diamond calls its authenticity into question. Frequently, cubic zirconium rings are printed with the initials “C.Z.” somewhere on the band, another sign to look out for.

Real diamonds are created under extreme pressure during volcanic activity, and as such, few (if any) are completely clear and without flaws. A diamond that is “too perfect” is very probably fake. Good tests for this include looking closely at the stone’s clarity, and, if the stone is unmounted, try to read a newspaper using the diamond as a glass. Genuine diamonds have a very slight yellowish tint, and a diamond that is perfectly clear may be false. Diamonds are also magnificent refractors of light, so if you can read through them, that is another indicator.

Furthermore, real diamonds are excellent heat conductors. Simply try breathing on your diamond: if it remains foggy for more than a second or so, it may be false. Real diamonds can cut glass, but buyer beware, as there are many stones that can simulate diamonds that are also of adequate hardness to perform this feat. Cutting glass is not an acid test.

In reality, the only way to be certain the diamond you’re getting is real is to have the stone examined by a certified gemologist who specializes in jewelry. Here at Kranich’s Jewelers, all our stones are certified real, so you can buy with confidence and be certain that you’re getting the genuine article!

Where Do Black Diamonds Come From?

black diamond earringsOne look at our selection of dazzling black diamond jewelry, and one question comes to mind immediately: How do I get one!? But after that, many people also wonder, where do black diamonds come from? The answer isn’t just surprising, it’s actually out of this world!

Normally found only in the Central African Republic and Brazil, black diamonds – or ‘carbonado’, as they are known – are not simply diamonds themselves, but a collection of many, many microscopic diamonds that have bonded together. The resulting imperfections that exist between these bonds give the carbonados their characteristic black or dark-grey luster. In all ways other than hardness and composition, black diamond carbonados actually share little with diamonds as we know them, lacking several elements that we know to exist in most diamonds today.

Several theories exist as to the origin of black diamonds. Among them are the idea that black diamonds were created not by the volcanic activity that creates diamonds, but rather by massive meteorite impacts dating back billions of years. Another is that black diamonds were formed by the spontaneous fission of thorium and uranium, which created the black imperfections.

Most intriguing, however, is data that suggests that black diamond carbonados were actually formed in interstellar space! Recent study reveals that black diamonds share a peculiar composition that they share with other materials formed near carbon stars. If this theory is correct, then what we know as black diamonds are actually a form of cosmic dust broken off from an asteroid-sized mass traveling through space.

Sadly, because of their extreme rarity and porous nature, actual black diamonds are not suitable for jewelry. But thanks to gemologists, a cunning recreation is available for beautiful jewelry. These black diamonds are in all ways actual diamonds, bearing the same imperfections that make the carbonado black diamonds so unique. And thanks to Kranich’s Jewelers, you can find a selection of beautiful black diamond jewelry right here on Earth!

Custom Engagement Ring

kranichs engagement ringThe diamond blog published a helpful story today about creating you own custom Engagement Ring. Here at Kranich’s Jewelers, we are always more that happy to help a customer create just the right engagement ring that will remain a timeless reminder of your love.  Here is a sample of the article from the diamond blog.

Select fancy shaped diamonds. Typical select round shaped ones. There are other shapes that you can choose from like oval and pear. With this shape, diamonds may appear to be bigger. This can definitely make your engagement ring look impressive. It is best to create an engagement ring with a pave setting. It consists of diamonds that are set together. Small beads metal hold the diamond together to make it look like it’s a dingle diamond. The problem with opting for this is the fact that it is quite expensive. This is due to the fact that there metal work is very intricate. It may cost you less if you go for a large diamond.

What finger is an anniversary ring worn on?

anniversary bandSo you’ve just been given a beautiful new ring for your anniversary from your loving husband. It’s beautiful, fashionable, elegant, everything you wanted and more. You gingerly take it out of the box, letting the light bounce and spill over every facet, every cut and angle, every curve. Gently, you tell him it’s beautiful, and you decide to put it on right away. As natural as anything, you slip it over your left ring finger and find…there’s already a ring there!

What’s a woman to do? So begins the dilemma of where one wears their sparkling new anniversary ring when they’ve got a treasured, meaningful wedding ring already on their finger. So what finger is an anniversary ring worn on, anyway?

The answer is surprisingly simple! Rules of etiquette regarding this matter are rather lacking, though the prevailing opinion is that an anniversary band should be worn one of two ways: either on the ring finger of your right hand, or on the same finger as your wedding band, with it! If the two rings won’t scratch, cause you physical distress, or look garish stacked one on top of the other, it’s generally accepted that a new anniversary ring should be worn there. Conversely, if the new ring is of a different metal than the old or would fit awkwardly on your left ring finger, it’s perfectly acceptable to wear it on your right ring finger. At Kranich’s Jewelers, you can find a selection of beautiful anniversary rings, and find just the right one to match your wedding band, too!

How Much is my Diamond Ring Worth? That’s a Good Question!

Ritani RingBefore you purchase a new diamond ring, anniversary ring, or engagement ring, you should have an idea of what you’re searching for, and some idea of how not to be fooled by a convincing fake! Kranich’s Jewelers would like to introduce you to the ‘Four C’s’ of diamond selection, a handy guide to valuing diamonds and telling them apart from synthetic stones!

The ‘Four C’s’ represent: color, clarity, cut, and carat weight, and these are the four value factors that professional gemologists and jewelers use to describe stones. These four factors, when taken together, provide a rough estimate of a stone’s value.

‘Color’ represents the letter value that is ascribed to the color the diamond bears before it is set. All diamonds contain microscopic discolorations that can be seen by a professional gemologist. The better the letter, the better the overall color of the gem. Values of D, E, and F are for diamonds that are virtually colorless. G, H, and I are for diamonds that are very nearly colorless, while K, L, and M represent gems with a slight tint, grades N, O, P, Q, and R being fairly tinted, usually a slight yellowish color, and lastly, grades S through Z being used for diamonds that are noticeably tinted, so much so the discoloration can be seen by the naked eye.

Cubic zirconia, moissanite, and other diamond replicas will frequently be unnaturally clear and colorless. Grown in a lab setting, these stones are not subject to the same imperfections that natural diamonds from the earth are.

‘Clarity’ represents the overall integrity of the gem, or in other words, how free of scratches, chips, interior cracks, or other flaws, all known as inclusions, it is. Most such flaws are only visible through a gemologists’ scope or other looking device such as a jewelers’ loupe. Clarity is an important factor, even if you can’t tell the difference between a clear and unclear gem at a glance, and the clearer the diamond, the more it’s worth. You should be carefully to know the flaws your diamond has, because each one is a possible weak spot on the diamond to be mindful of.

Replica or simulated diamonds will likewise be unnaturally free of such internal and external flaws. Real diamonds are created under extreme pressure and heat that leaves scars; simulants are created in laboratories under precise and controlled conditions.

‘Cut’ is possibly the most subjective to your diamond’s monetary value, but for many people it’s the most important when determining personal value. The fashion in which the diamond has been shaped is its cut, and you probably know many of them by familar names like ‘princess’, ‘heart’, ‘emerald-cut’, ‘pear’, ‘round brilliant’, ‘cushion’, ‘marquise’ and so on. While a poor cut can negatively effect the value of a diamond overall, a well-crafted shape does little to affect the price of the gem. Still, various cuts mean different things or bear different significance to different people, and has a lot of bearing on what stones are purchased or passed on. Another more important component of the cut of a diamond is it’s ability to reflect light. The more optimum the facets of a diamond are, the more sparkle and fire is generated while the light is reflected back out of the stone. It will cause the diamond to dance in the light, therefore be much more eye appealing and noticeable. Conversely, a poorly cut diamond will appear dead and lifeless.

Imitation diamonds frequently receive the same cuts as the genuine article, though a sloppy cut can be indicative of a stone of lesser value. However, this is the hardest factor by which to judge a stone on sight.

‘Carat’, lastly, is a simple expression of how much the diamond weighs. Obviously, the larger and heavier the diamond, the more monetary value it has. One carat is equal to 1/5 of a gram. Generally you will find that larger diamonds vastly outvalue their smaller cousins, as larger diamonds are rare and, thus, more in demand. In fact, one large diamond is frequently worth double, triple, or many times over more than its’ equivalent carat weight in smaller diamonds, and the price goes up exponentially the larger the diamonds get!

Thanks to replica stones being relatively cheap, they can be created in large sizes and sold for prices anywhere from fair to drastically overinflated, in such cases as they are being passed off as genuine. Use your common sense; if a diamond seems too big to be as cheap as it’s being sold for, chances are good it’s not a real diamond at all!

Naturally, the only way to be completely sure how much your diamond ring is worth is to take it to be valued by a certified gemologist or AGS Jeweler, who will consider all of these factors when judging the value of your stone and be able to tell you definitively if your stone is a genuine diamond. Alternatively, if you’re still looking for that perfect, gem, shop in confidence with Kranich’s Jewelers and be assured to get a clear, brilliant, well-cut diamond at a value price!
